  • diabetes is a chronic disease where there is inadequate production or utilization of insulin to break down blood sugar into energy
  • illness tends to raise blood sugar in those persons with diabetes
  • high blood sugar levels which have previously been under control are a red flag that an infectious process may be occurring
  • you may need additional insulin when sick but contact your Health Care Provider for the dosage
  • diabetic ketoacidosis is a medical emergency where the amount of insulin in the body is not sufficient enough to break down ketones
  • diabetic ketoacidosis can usually be prevented from reaching an extremely dangerous state if an individual remains well hydrated
  • discuss with your Health Care Provider the use of over-the-counter (OTC) products before you take them
  • some OTC medications can raise the blood sugar level in your blood

    Self-Management - You can help in the following ways:
    • test blood sugar every 4 hours,more often when sick
    • record all blood sugars
    • test urine for ketones every 4 hours, report moderate to large ketones to Health Care Provider
    • let a friend or family member know when you are sick so they can contact you periodically
    • take temperature every 4 hours
    • stay warm and get plenty of rest
    • drink additional sugar free and caffeine free fluids, if able
    • eat soft, (gelatin, applesauce, crackers, soup) smaller, more frequent meals
    • continue to take insulin or blood sugar medication if you are sure your blood sugar is not too low
    • take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) for fever, chills and body aches
